Scola de Ert Cademia
The Art School in Ortisei, also called Cademia, is a college of further education in Val Gardena. In order to improve the quality of art in Val Gardena, an art school was founded in 1825 in the Casa Lanon in Ortisei. In 1872, Ferdinand Demetz founded the sculpture school, called Staatlich subventionierte Lehrwerkstätte für Holzschnitzer, which was located at his workshop and was partially publicly financed. In their first year after opening, they had 140 pupils. After World War One, the school was under the control of Italian directors, Guido Balsamo Stella and Alcide Ticò. From 1890 onwards, the school was located in Piazza S. Durich; in 1938, the school was then moved to the ’Cademia’ in a building bought by the city council. From 1957, the school was under Raimund Mureda´s control. The best known teachers at that time were Milly Schmalzl, Peter Demetz, Josef Kostner, Luis Kostner, Rudolf Moroder and Markus Vallazza. Some famous pupils of this school are Gotthard Bonell, Rudi Stingel, Egon Rusina, Augusto Murer, Friedrich Gurschler, Martin Rainer, Albert Mellauner, Barbara Tavella, Lois Anvidalfarei, Franz Kehrer, Sonja Hofer, Manfred Mureda, Leander Piazza, Sergio Sommavilla, Heinz Mader and Guido Anton Muss.
