In the 1930s, Mili Schmalzl attended the Beato Angelico Art School in Milan, where she became acquainted with a new aesthetic and came into contact with modern artists. Later, the young artist from Val Gardena learned about the style of the Bauhaus at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. In her batiks, tapestries, and collages, Schmalzl explored colors and forms for their own value, investigated new laws of composition, and developed her own unique aesthetic even with unconventional materials. As a teacher at the art school in Val Gardena, Schmalzl significantly influenced the young South Tyrolean generation of artists.
