Franz Dantone, born in a peasant family as Franz Pascalin (also known as Franz Dantone Pascalin), left home at the age of 20 and moved to various cities throughout Europe, including Augsburg and Munich. He learned the art of photography abroad. His photographs of Tyrolean mountain landscapes were displayed at two exhibitions at the end of the nineteenth century in Salzburg and Innsbruck. Around 1850, he moved to Gries in Val di Fassa. There, he worked tirelessly for charity and minority rights.
